Explained

What is IPTV, and how does it actually work?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Stripped of the jargon, it means your television programmes arrive down the same connection as your email — and that one change explains almost everything else about it.

The short version

Traditional television broadcasts the same signal to everyone at once, through the air, a cable or a satellite dish. Your set tunes in to part of it. IPTV works the other way around: your player asks for one specific stream, and only that stream is sent to you.

That difference is why you can pause and rewind live programming on some services, why an on-demand library can sit beside live channels, and why picture quality depends on your connection rather than on the weather or the state of the cable in the street.

What actually happens when you press play

  1. Your player application sends your subscription details to the service and asks for the channel list.
  2. The list arrives along with the electronic program guide — the data that fills in what is on now and what follows.
  3. You select a channel. The player requests that stream and starts filling a small buffer before showing anything.
  4. Playback begins, and the player keeps topping up that buffer while you watch. When the connection dips, the buffer is what absorbs it.

That last point is worth holding on to. Buffering is not usually a sign that something is broken. It is the buffer emptying faster than the connection refills it, which is why the fix almost always lies with the network rather than the app.

Terms you will run into

Four pieces of vocabulary cover most setup instructions you will read anywhere.

M3U playlist

A plain text file listing channels and where to find each stream. Some players ask for a playlist URL instead of a username and password; both are ways of describing the same subscription.

EPG

The Electronic Program Guide — the schedule data that turns a bare channel list into something you can browse. It downloads separately and can take a minute on first load.

VOD

Video On Demand: the library of titles you start whenever you like, as opposed to live channels running to a schedule. Both sit inside the same player.

Buffer

A few seconds of video held in reserve so that a brief dip in your connection does not interrupt the picture. Larger buffers absorb more, at the cost of a slower start.

What IPTV does not change

It is worth being clear about the limits, because a good deal of marketing in this industry is not. Moving television onto the internet does not remove licensing: programming is still sold by territory and by period, and what is available to you can change. It does not make a slow connection fast. And it does not eliminate interruptions, because no service that depends on a home broadband line can promise that.

What it does give you is flexibility — the devices you already own, terms measured in months rather than years, and a library that sits alongside live channels instead of replacing them.

If a service promises perfect uptime, every channel in the world and instant activation, treat all three claims with the same scepticism. We would rather tell you what your connection needs to carry.

Frequently asked questions

Questions customers ask before they order

What is Elitestream IPTV?

Elitestream IPTV is a subscription service that delivers television channels and on-demand titles over your home internet connection instead of a cable or satellite line. You keep the devices you already own, add a compatible player app, and sign in with the details we send you after your order.

How does an IPTV subscription work?

Television signals are sent to you as internet data rather than over the air. When your subscription is set up you receive login details for a compatible player application. The player contacts our service, loads the channel list and program information, and plays the stream you select. Nothing is downloaded permanently and no dish or cable box is involved.
